| Final Deal | Deal was made on the show with sharks Barbara Corcoran for $50k for 35% of Company, but it fell through after the show. |
Dorene Humason is from Folsom, California, and for the past 25 years, she has worked in the food industry as a buyer and a sales representative, where she found a void in the market that she sought to fill.
Being from Folsom, California, Dorene played her name off the famous Johnny Cash's nickname "The man in black" and named her new brand, The Chef In Black.
Her only product so far is a dry Chinese salad dressing, which she, in her first year, did $78k revenue in 450 stores. This year she is in 1300 stores but had to redo all her packaging because she accidentally had used a Chinese prostitute on her packaging.
Dorene has put $300k into the company and feels her seasoning would be very difficult for someone to duplicate.
I'm scared to death of the food category because the death rate is so high.
The sharks are all scared of the food category, but Barbara takes a stab, and mixes in a Johnny Cash reference, ultimately closing a deal.

Dorene wasn't sure her episode would even air because Episode 10 was supposed to be the finale until ABC signed for five more episodes (although one got bumped to season 2 due to an earthquake in Haiti).
To be on Shark Tank, The Chef In Black agreed to give Shark tank 2% royalties on future profits, but Shark Tank never asked them for money, and while for seasons 2 and 3, Shark Tank raised that royalty for new pitches to 5% after season 3 Shark Tank stopped all royalties.
Dorene thinks her "prostitute packaging" got her on the show because it made the producers laugh. Dorene said they cut out 90-95% of Kevin O'Leary's comments on the prostitute packaging.
Dorene took some advice from Kevin Harrington in changing the name and packaging. In 2014 she was in 2000 stores. She is getting into Walmart with the boost of being a "certified women-owned business."
Dorene is aware that many entrepreneurs on Shark Tank think it is easy money after the deal, and she says the Shark Tank updates make the road feel a lot happier than reality. Dorene and her daughter had a great experience with Shark Tank.
The Chef In Black went out of business in 2016.
