While many of Kim Preis' friends were pregnant, Kim came up with a fun way to answer the commonly asked question, "when are you due"? Her company, Samson Martin, creates t-shirts with words like "Due in September" or "Coming this Fall."
Kim has a trademark on "due in," and business was great at the start. Unfortunately, competitors have come into the space with similar ideas without the phrase "due in," which has led to a steady decrease in sales.
Samson Martin has been in business for six years and has done a total of $1.4 million in revenue with a peak year of $400k. Last year's revenue was $90k.
Kim requires many skews to cover 12 possible "due in" months and multiple designs, so the product line is complicated. Kim also wants to lower her price point and try and aim for shelf space in bigger stores like Khol's instead of boutique stores.
The sharks all see that the business will never repeat the early monopoly, hype phase again while Kim subsides Samson Martin with hope. Kevin O'Leary is the only one to so bluntly express his thoughts, which Kim and the other sharks find distasteful.
Sometimes the truth is the best medicine.
