Urbio Shark Tank Pitch

Beau Oyler and Jared Aller found their living situation and many others unaccommodating for outdoor plants. They used their background in industrial design to create Urbio, a modern, modular vertical garden designed for urban living.

Urbio experienced a publicity buzz upon its launch and has sold in 50 countries. While Urbio began targeting indoor plants, Beau and Jared saw use cases in the bathroom, the office, and other possibilities.

Before Beau and Jared get into the business numbers, Mark Cuban steps in to announce that Beau and Jared have reached out to Mark in the past about an investment. Mark said he would have an unfair advantage over the other sharks due to the research he had done and stepped out with respect to the other sharks. This is the first time we have seen a shark do this.

Urbio has a team of eight designers, which work on several projects they design for outside clients, many of which have found success. Urbio is their first self-owned product.

Urbio has done $125k in sales through its website and around 25 brick-and-mortar stores in the first four months. They want to spend the investment money on inventory to meet demand, such as a $150k purchase order from The Container Store. Magnets are the most expensive cost in making their products, but they are working with a manufacturer in China to reduce those costs.

Kevin, Robert, and Lori all make offers. Beau and Jared settle on Lori. Lori gets the deal and gets some love from the other sharks on comparing Kevin to a golf ball, being small and bald, and Lori wanting to hit Kevin 300 yards away.

. Beau said that they negotiated with Lori for five months, but ultimately the terms were unreasonable, so they parted ways. Urbio sold $100k of products the days after appearing on Shark Tank, and the publicity helped secure the deal with The Container Store.

Before going on Shark Tank, Beau Oyler and Jared Aller raised $77k in a Kickstarter

campaign in 2012. In 2015, Urbio acquired a competitor, Sabi Space, which focused on bathroom products. Urbio also created a cheaper product line called Perch, which used Scotch command strips instead of magnets. Urbio was acquired by Honey Can Do in 2016.

Beau's brother contracted aids in 1985 from tainted medication he was taking to combat a family trait that causes an inability for blood to clot trait and ultimately died. This gave Beau new respect for others' issues, and Beau became very religious and eventually served as Bishop at his church, which, all I know, means he can move diagonally in chess.

Jared left Enlisted Design in 2014 and worked as a designer for other companies. Beau has periodically taught design courses at several reputable colleges over the years. As of 2022, Beau has remained CEO of Enlisted Design since 2008, with 60 employees between an Oakland, California office, Salt Lake City, Utah office, and remote workers.

In 2022 Beau Oyler went on the People of Packaging podcast

and he said Enlisted Design was purchased by Pattern in 2020. Pattern is the third largest seller on Amazon, which gives them tremendous insight into what sells best. Beau spends about 80% of his working time at Enlisted Design and 20% working with Pattern and a new company sprouted from the two in 2022 called Village Brands, villagebrands.com

, which he intends to transition more of his time to in the future.

Village Brands publically raised $225 million at a $2 billion valuation and privately raised more. Village Brands buys existing brands and used Enlisted Design to give the brand a makeover and Pattern to maximize sales. They are also working on incubating their first product from the ground up in Q3 2022. Enlisted Design has worked with several notable brands such as allbirds and famous Youtuber Mr. Beast with his Mr. Beast Burgers and Feastables chocolate.

Beau has two kids and enjoys spending time with his family, surfing, and doing other activities. Shockingly enough, Beau mentioned at one point in his life, he weighed around 300 lbs. Beau is fascinating. Beau Oyler my favorite Sharkpreneur (yes, I just made that word up) that I've researched so far.

In 2022 Urbio can still be purchased at honeycando.com
