Matt Canepa and Pat Pezet were looking for something in their pantry to keep them up while working on an Economics project in college when they stumbled upon putting coffee grinds in their mouth. Matt and Pat won a school innovation competition and improved their idea to put the coffee grinds in a pouch and called it Grinds.
Matt and Pat have baseball backgrounds and noticed chewing tobacco was a growing problem in the sport. Grinds targets that market with their healthy alternative to chewing tobacco. Over 20 Major League Baseball teams currently use grinds.
Two days after the San Francisco Giants won the World Series, their manager, Bruce Bochy, gave Matt and Pat a call out of the blue, thanking them for their great product. This gave Matt and Pat the motivation they needed to continue. In 2011 sales were $135k, and in 2012 they are on track for $300k.
Kevin makes a royalty offer but spins the story with his "I won't take any equity" as if the entrepreneurs and everybody watching are stupid. If you take a 15% royalty perpetually, you own something better than 15% equity. You don't take part in costs. It's a lie. Kevin tricks entrepreneurs not by lying but by withholding the truth, which bothers me greatly, and I forbid him to do that.
Robert and Daymond put an offer in with hopes of Daymond's distribution networks scaling Grinds before the other big players take the market space. After some brief attempts at negotiating, Matt and Pat are thrilled to accept the offer.

Matt Canepa and Pat Peze started Grinds with $15k they won from an idea contest at their college, Cal Poly. It appears that the deal with the sharks fell through, and I could not find any discussion on the topic beyond that.
