). Oh wait that's just Steve Maloney pitching his company, Muddy Water Camo on Shark Tank. Oh and over in the bushes is Stephen Kirkpatrick, a wildlife photographer. Together they created a new process of making camouflage that they believe will revolutionize the hunting industry.

Steve and Stephan already raised $600k for 16% of Muddy Water Camo implying a $2.5 million valuation before selling anything. Muddy Water Camo sells its own garments through 58 retailers and licenses its designs to other brands. Sales this year are $150k so far and Steve and Stephan believe they can do $3 million in sales by year three.

Robert doesn't believe the slightly more realistic camo will help hunters shoot more ducks. All the sharks are uninterested in entertaining the desired valuation placed on Muddy Water Camo. Kevin makes an offer anyway, hoping to license the designs, but Steve and Stephan don't budge.

Muddy Water Camo After Shark Tank

Steve Maloney and Stephen Kirkpatrick did an interview

with Shark Tank Blog after airing, where they revealed Stephen had spent four years gathering pictures, and they had only been selling products for about a month when they filmed for Shark Tank. Muddy Water Camo drew a lot of publicity, even capturing the Mississippi Governor's attention.

According to a 2015 article

from a local Mississippi newswriter and the included court documents, a provisional patent filed in 2010 for their process of creating camo apparel listed Steve Maloney and Stephen Kirkpatrick as co-founders. The duo raised money and gained several investors. Michael Simmons invested $30k and provided legal services to Muddy Water Camo in exchange for equity. Simmons hired Chris Bahl as CEO, who received a large salary and equity. The equity breakdown of the main parties was as follows.

  • Steve Maloney - 24.27%

  • Stephen Kirkpatrick - 15.75%

  • Chris Bahl - 10%

  • Michael Simmons - 9.54%

  • David Holloway - 5.22%

  • Gregory Spring - 3.61%

  • Daniel Oscar Alexander - 3.61%

  • Will Clark - 2%

Bahl was a former Cabela's employee who claimed he might provide a $1.5 million investment, however never put any money in. Kirkpatrick opposed bringing Bahl in, claiming Bahl had been previously fired for "misconduct." In response, several investors threatened to sue Kirkpatrick for defamation of Bahl. Simmons created a secret investors email group in a "cool kids" club manner. The "cool kids" consisted primarily of Simmons, Holloway, Spring, and Alexander.

The "cool kids" formed another company under Yazoo, LLC in 2013, where Steve Maloney was left out of the conversation but got 5% equity and was given $10 for the patent. Stephan Kirkpatrick got nothing justified by made-up wrongdoings. Will Clark, a former pro baseball player received the largest equity increase. In 2013 Maloney and Kirkpatrick sent Bahl an email inquiring about basic info on the business, and they received a reply from Bahl laced with profanity refusing to provide info. The "cool kids" eventually realized the misconduct by Bahl was true and tried to hide the evidence until ultimately firing him. Bahl then got pissed off and threatened to sue Muddy Water and force the business to shut down. Muddy water filed a restraining order against Bahl.

In 2014 Muddy Water convinced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to remove Kirkpatrick from the patent. In 2015 Stephen Kirkpatrick sued Muddy Water Camo, claiming they tried to kick him out of the company he co-founded and steal his patent. The occurrence between 2015 and 2022 will require a bit more "investigative journalism" in the future.

As of 2022, Will Clark runs the Muddy Water Camo (Muddy Water Outdoors) website, muddywateroutdoors.com

with perhaps some of these other investors maintaining roles. In 2022 Michael Simmons appears to still be practicing law and is listed on the website

. Steve Maloney appears to have been a practicing attorney with mentions of him in public articles most recently as 2019 though as of 2022, I can't find clear info on him.
