Breathometer Shark Tank Pitch

Charles Michael Yim created a portable phone attachment that allows a user to test his/her blood alcohol content to know if it's legal for them to drive home and inform the time it would take to return to a normal level.

Charles put in $50k and raised $500k from angel investors to get the product made. He plans to use the next money he gets for manufacturing. Breathometer got $140k worth of preorders through a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Charles is exploring ideas for similar products, such as bad breath testing.

Charles reveals that he ultimately is hoping to raise $1 million. Every shark is interested and eventually decides to work together to get Charles his $1 million while avoiding competing against themselves. Mark wants a more significant piece, so he puts up half of the deal while the rest of the sharks split the rest, and Charles makes one phone call to his CFO, Matt Ackerman, and accepts the offer.

campaign for Breathometer that Charles Michael Yim mentioned in his pitch got $138k in preorders in 2013.

In season 5, episode 25, we got an update that Breathometer did $1 million in sales in three months following Shark Tank. Kevin visited Charles to represent the Sharks and questioned Charles as to why people were not getting their orders. Charles mentions how each shark has individually helped them and reveals that he is working on his next projects on halitosis (bad breath), dehydration, and more.

In 2016 in season 2, episode 7 of Beyond The Tank, we got an update that Breathometer had $20 million in sales soon after Shark Tank and it took six months to fill the orders. The staff grew to over 20 people. Kevin O'Leary met with Charles and they identified that Breathometer was a failure and they hope Charles gets it right by focusing on Mint.

In season 6, episode 6, they got another update: they created an improved version that used Bluetooth called Breeze. They expected to do $10 million in sales for the year.

Mark lost $1 million on the deal by his memory, which the deal on screen sometimes changes and perhaps Mark put more money in over time. Mark's view was that Charles was taking extravagant vacations like Bora Bora instead of working, while Charles viewed it as networking and attempting to raise money for Breathometer. Regardless the money ran out. In early 2017 the Federal Trade Commission raised concerns over the accuracy of Breathometer, which claimed it had done "government-lab grade testing." Brethometer settled with the FTC and fully refunded customers who bought a device. Charles was hoping to sell the company outright and give the investors a small return of their money.

In 2015 Charles ran an indiegogo.com

campaign for the breath quality tester, Mint, which got $119k of preorders. Mint partnered with Philips on the device. As of 2022, their website, breathometer.com
