Monkey Mat Shark Tank Pitch

Christie Barany was at the airport with her kids for a 6-hour layover, and the kids were crawling all over what Christie described as dirty, disgusting floors. Christie could not find a travel-friendly mat for their kids to play on, so she teamed up with her longtime friend, Courtney Turich, to create Monkey Mat. Monkey Mat is an attachable pouch with a soft, water-repellant mat inside. Monkey Mat can also be used at the beach, concerts, and other applications.

Monkey Mat has $60k of sales in its first year of business, selling on its website and 50 retail or online stores. Monkey Mat costs the consumer $40, and costs Christie and Courtney $13 to produce in China.

The sharks see Monkey Mat overpriced for the mass market and compare their vision to the portable emergency-use umbrella. Christie and Courtney don't want to lessen the quality. Lori believes she can get the price down and teams up with Mark on an offer very near what Christie and Courtney asked for, which they accept.

Christie and Courtney were working on releasing a similar product, Fur-eez, to target pet owners.

in 2022. Courtney said Mark Cuban was indispensable because he gave her and Christie Barany access to his team. Running Monkey Mat became very logistical because they had their products made in China and had to deal with shipping centers and big box retailers. This was not Courtney's strong suit or passion. In 2017 Courtney decided to leave and sold her shares.
