Hamboards Shark Tank Pitch

Pete Hamborg lives in Huntington Beach, California, with his wife and five kids, who are lifeguards and love surfing. Pete, his oldest son Gus Hamborg, and his cousin Donnie Sandusky present to the sharks their company, Hamboards. Hamboards are surfboards built for land so that anyone in America can have an experience similar to surfing.

Gus senses the Hamboard brand is gaining traction, and they need money to produce the number of boards to meet their overwhelming demand. They make all the boards in Huntington Beach, California. Gus and Pete are the creators and users of the product but are less business savvy. At the same time, Donnie has previous entrepreneurial experience, such as an invention that helps inflatable balls stay full for longer.

Robert tries Hamboards out and rides it pretty well, showing progress from his performance in season 4 with Surfset Fitness

who he says will probably do $3 million in revenue this year because they are marketing geniuses.

In the last year, sales were $225k, and they plan to hit $350k for the current calendar year. They hope to expand Hamboards' retail presence.

Lori feels the product will only attract a coastal audience, and Mark similarly thinks inland people do not resonate with surf culture. Daymond wants to license the design to skateboard companies, which Robert points out removes all the authenticity the family has with Pete as a firefighter and the surfing family in Huntington beach making the boards. Robert makes an offer for a larger involvement in the company.

Don Sandusky did an interview

with Shark Tank Blog prior to going on Shark Tank and discussed that he lived in Maine and sold his company to Warrior sports, who wanted him to move to Detroit, Michigan. Instead, Don decided to work with his cousin, whom he met as an adult and hit it off with. Don made periodic trips to California to meet with them.

In season 6, episode 11, Robert updates that Hamboards did $1 million in sales since appearing on Shark Tank. In season 1, episode 9 of Beyond The Tank, Pete Hamborg expressed how surprised he was with Hamboards' growth though he continued to work as a firefighter to help fund the business, and one kid was full-time with Hamboards. Robert encourages them to sell more lifestyle t-shirts, likening them to Ferrari, making a large chunk of their money from t-shirts from people who like the brand but cant afford to buy one.

podcast in 2020, in which this Jim guy talked over Pete every time Pete went to speak, so I hardly got anything from it. Piecing together cut-off sentences, it sounds as though Pete enjoyed hand-making boards, however, it's not very profitable and as investors came in, they took over the process, and Pete felt his ideas got pushed to the back and he slowly removed himself from Hamboards.
