Final Deal | All Sharks went Out |
Curtis Williams and Matt Von Waaden have heard that playing music to a baby in the womb could be beneficial. An example they provide is playing a sound to a baby that it heard while in its mother's womb could help soothe the baby. Curtis and Matt created earbuds that easily attach to one's belly to play music called Bellybuds.
Curtis and Matt have been waiting three years for their patent to get approved. There are competitors on the market with product variations, like belts that have predated Bellybuds. Mark Cuban said he used competitors years ago for all his children. Bellybuds sold through several retailers, but after one seller crushed everybody's profit by selling at prices below everybody else, Curtis and Matt decided to pull back to rectify the situation.
In Bellybuds' first year, the company lost $175k, in 2012, sales were $300k with a $140k loss, and at their current point in 2013, they have done $340k in sales. Curtis and Matt have $1.3 million worth of inventory in a warehouse ready to be sold. They also have $100k cash in the bank.
The sharks feared there was too much competition in the space for them to make any profit. The $4 million valuation is also a high ask for the sharks. All sharks go out.

Curtis said they bought inventories in bulk to get their costs down but were sure they would sell out of their $1.3 million batch of inventory they mentioned on the show by quarter one of 2014.
