Slawsa Shark Tank Pitch

Julie Busha found traditional condiments old and boring. Julie bought equity into an existing company, Slawsa, that made a cross between slaw and salsa, and she loved it. Julie eventually bought the other partner out of the business for around $50k. Julie also pays a 2% royalty to the previous owner, which ends once a certain amount is paid, but she is paying that from her savings and doesn't want the sharks to be involved with that.

Julie said she and her husband went to college and earned scholarships and worked to leave debt free. They bought a house well below what the lender approved them for, and she has never overspent to the point of paying interest on credit cards. Julie only took on the Slawsa opportunity because she felt prepared.

In a year and a half, Slawsa is in 4,200 stores, including Kroger and Publix. Slawsa did $212k in sales in its first year, and this year is year two, which Julia projects to finish with $500k in sales. Julie wants the money to increase her production capacity.

The sharks greatly admire Julie and would likely be investing if she entered the tank with a different product. Unfortunately, while sales were promising, the condiment business was an uncertain route for the sharks, and they were not in love with the taste of the Slawsa. All sharks go out.

podcast in 2016. Julie started running track in high school and surprised herself and others with her rapid improvement to become one of the best runners in her area. Julie's running showed her what she could endure and how well she could improve with effort. Julie earned both athletic and academic scholarships. Out of college Julie and her husband were told they were cleared for a $400k loan to buy a house, which shocked Julie, who was a numbers person. Julie and her husband purchased a more affordable $175k home and outfitted it with used furniture. Julie and her husband agreed to live off one of their incomes and save the other.

Julie worked for a sports marketing agency out of college and spent much time working with NASCAR. Julie adopted many roles and had a lot of responsibility put on her. Julie switched jobs to do marketing for General Mills. Working with General Mills gave Julie a first-hand look at brands being marketed into awareness from the ground up.

in 2017. Julie partnered with a guy who had a family recipe for Slawsa, but he also had a full-time job and provided little help. Julie put in $50k and did all the heavy lifting. A year later, her business partner, out of the blue, requested that Julie buy him out. Julie was shocked. The guy may have wanted the money after seeing some early growth. Julie was forced to fork up more money, but she was at least pleased to own 100% instead of 50% of the business she had entirely built.

. Julie had been a fan of Shark Tank since season one. She applied for Slawsa to be on season 4 through email but got rejected. For season 5, she drove to an open casting, waited in a long line, and was successfully chosen. Julie's pitch got pushed from Saturday to the final pitch to the sharks in season 5 on Sunday. Julie ended up sick the entire day Saturday, so the rescheduling turned out to be a blessing. Julie was fully confident there would be multiple offers. When Julie left without a deal, she felt demoralized for a month. The only conclusion she could come to was that the Sharks personally didn't like her. As the emotions waned, she realized that the sharks had likely been burned in the food category enough that they didn't feel it was worth the risk.

Julie said Lori ate her plate and Robert's and gave positive feedback, but the edit did not present Slawsa with a great-tasting feeling. Soon after Shark Tank aired, Julie launched an IndieGoGo

campaign to raise $25k to expand into a low-sugar and fire variety. Unfortunately, the campaign only raised $1k.

In my mind, success is so far down the road I can't even see it. Until Slawsa is the category leader with placement on every major retail shelf, until Slawsa is in concessions at every major stadium, until Slawsa is on every hot dog cart in the country, then and only then will I deem Slawsa a success.

—Julie Busha

Julie writes about learnings such as why perpetual royalties should be avoided and what it takes to succeed with a consumer goods product. A fraction of what it takes is a willingness to work 80 hours a week and reinvest everything into the company for years. Julie says aggressive marketing efforts and a fair price are of higher importance in creating awareness than what a good-tasting product alone can do.

As of 2022, Slawsa can be purchased in 8000 retail stores or on their website, slawsa.com
